The mighty Mekong River flows along much of Laos' western border, serving as the country’s primary conduit for goods and people for thousands of years.

Living standards in Laos have improved over recent years, but significant development challenges remain. The benefits of economic growth have aided many. Australian volunteers support partner organisations working to ensure economic growth is distributed equally, regardless of gender, race, or geographic location. 

The Australian Volunteers Program is guided by the Australian Government’s Aid Investment Plan for Laos as well as retaining the flexibility to respond to emerging priorities.

Volunteer assignments focus on a range of development issues, including education, human resource development, trade and natural resource management. 

Australian volunteers are placed in Vientiane, Luang Prabang, Pakse and Savannakhet.
